Activity 2. Vocabulary and Reading

Page 67 Listening

A.   Listen to the first part or the interview.  Which two factors influence the managerial function today, and what are the two examples that Laurie gives of these factors?

1.    The ability to manage in an increasingly competitive, volatile, changing, business environment. Recognition of the individual person within the work organization, diverse workforce, importance of non-verbal communications and international human resource management

Example: BRICK

2.    Manager today has to manage with an increasing rate of technical change, interact with staff who may not be at the same desk, may not work together, may not be in the same building, may not even be in the same location and may not even be in the same country.

Example: INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY, ICT

 

B.   Listen to the second part. Which six managerial philosophies does Laurie mention?

 

1.    Consideration, respect and trust: most people respond according to the way they are treated.

2.    Recognition and credit: people can be praised to success

3.    Involvement and availability: take an interest in your staff

4.    A sense of justice: treat people fairly, but according to merit

5.    Positive action on an individual basis: If colleagues are working in a team and one or two colleagues need to be criticised

6.    Emphasis on end results: The ends do not always fully justify the means, but wherever possible, place emphasis on not time-keeping, or what people appear to be doing, but the level of performance actually achieved.

At my last company, the managers were remote and not at all APPROACHABLE they were hard to get to know. The only one who showed any emotion was the CEO, who had a VOLATILE temper. He was completely ruthless and didn´t care about his staff at all. He acted like a dictator. He had a ANTI – AUTHORITARIAN management style, insisting that everything was exactly right. He was also very demanding, making us work really unsociable hours. In my new company, the managers are good communicators, decision - making is open and transparent and the style is APPROACHABLE Management is by consensus. All the staff are TALENTED and experts in their own fields. They are SELF - MOTIVATED and trusted to work without supervision.
